Sunday Sound: Heard on 'This Week'

Below are some of the notable comments made Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Guests included Obama Campaign Senior Adviser, Robert Gibbs; Romney Campaign Senior Adviser, Ed Gillespie; Fox News Anchor and author of "Killing Kennedy," Bill O'Reilly; Democratic strategist, James Carville; Republican strategist, Mary Matalin ; Nobel Prize-winning New York Times columnist, Paul Krugman ; Wall Street Journal Columnist, Peggy Noonan; and ABC News senior political correspondent Jonathan Karl.

HEADLINERS

1. Gibbs weighs in on Romney's debate performance

GIBBS: Governor Romney had a masterful theatrical performance just this past week, but the underpinnings and foundations of that performance were fundamentally dishonest.

2. Gibbs disagrees with Stephanie Cutter on the Obama campaign's view of Romney's tax cuts

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UM: President Obama continues to distort Mitt Romney's economic plan. The latest - not telling the truth about Mitt Romney's tax plan. The AP says doesn't add up. ABC News, mostly fiction. Even the Obama campaign admitted it wasn't true.

[STEPHANIE CUTTER]: Well, OK, stipulated, it won't be near $5 trillion.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

STEPHANOPOULOS: So does the campaign now accept that the cuts will be less than $5 trillion?

GIBBS: No, absolutely not. If you're going to reduce the Bush tax rates by 20 percent, and the estate tax, and the AMT, change the corporate rate, and a whole host of other changes, that adds up to a reduction in revenue, $4.8 trillion.

3. Gibbs claims Romney's budget plan lacks detail

GIBBS: Look, the only thing he outlined that he would cut in the budget is Big Bird. He's taken the battle straight to Sesame Street, and let Wall Street run hog wild.

4. Gibbs says Biden's "buried" middle class remark wasn't a gaffe

GIBBS: Well, I don't think that was a gaffe, George, because I think what the vice president was talking about is what he's talked about every day, which is a series of eight years of horrifically bad economic decisions-

5. Gillespie criticizes the Obama campaign's response to Wednesday's debate

GILLESPIE: The Obama campaign, they remind me a little bit of a 7-year-old losing a checker game, and then instead of being frustrated at the outcome, they sweep the board off the table.

6. Gillespie believes Big Bird can still be successful

GILLESPIE: Big Bird, I can tell you, as the father of three children, grown now, but any father who has gone to a toy store knows that Big Bird is a pretty commercially successful entity? Big Bird would be pretty successful, I suspect, without a government federal subsidy and all that debt.

7. Gillespie comments on 'damning' jobs report numbers

GILLESPIE: George, the numbers themselves are very damning. When you look at it, we had

fewer jobs created in September than were created in August, fewer jobs created in August than were created in July.

ROUNDTABLE

8. Karl says the debate created a new race

KARL: This is it's a new race after that debate. Imagine if Romney had come in and had a terrible performance, you have what happened before and then you had the jobs number on Friday, it would have effectively been over.

9. Carville says Obama didn't want to be at the debate

CARVILLE: I said I didn't want to come to this conclusion but sitting watching I have to come to it: he just didn't want to be there.

10. Krugman doesn't think press can handle 'untruths'

KRUGMAN: The press just doesn't know how to handle flat out untruths? I just think that pre-existing condition thing was a defining moment. It was saying this guy believes not only that he can say something that isn't true but something that his own campaign has admitted isn't true. And he can say it in front of 70 million people. That's amazing.

11. Matalin blasts Obama on his 'game'

MATALIN: Can I state the obvious here since we all have theories, the obvious is he didn't bring his game because he doesn't have a game.

10 Best Marketing Campaigns September 2012 | MrLukeAbbott.com

There was some seriously cool campaigns in September. What we?ve been seeing for sometime is a move towards The Internet of Things ? where everyday objects that were not digitally connected, become connected. RFID is an example of this and that?s been around some time. This past month we have seen a very diverse set of products become ?digitally enabled? ? for better or for worse. There was a live Twitter feed in a print magazine, chocolate bars with GPS technology, RFID enabled socks and an in-store loyalty programme that uses facial recognition technology.

1. Nestl? ?We Will Find You?

This ticks all the boxes for me. For the consumer it?s a very simple to communicate concept, that requires minimum effort to take part in with a very clear benefit for them and a big technology twist. You can also enter codes from promotional packs on a Facebook app to win a cash prize.

?

2. Hunted ?Byzantium Security?

Hunted is a new BBC HBO co-production about a female spy who reappears a year after she is presumed dead. This online game uses photos, video and audio in what seems like a series of bizarre questions ? you think your building towards an end, which you are, but? well that would be telling. I passed this onto three friends of mine to play and they gave up, when I told them what they missed on the last level they were kind of annoyed at giving up. In other words ? spend the five minutes until the end. Oh and it log?s into your Facebook account to pull content for some of the rounds. While I really liked this game, I?m not so sure the connection with the TV show was clear (except bar a trailer played at the end), but that?s not it?s biggest flaw ? the biggest flaw was all three of my friends dropping out before finishing the game and thus missing the connection with the TV show and ? the point of the whole thing.

Play Byzantium Tests?here.

In the US, more precisely on Wall Street, the game was supported with this out of home communication and banner ad?s on WallStreetJournal.com

?

3. FaceDeals

I mentioned this in the intro ? users are checked into businesses via face recognition technology and then sent an offer based on their ?likes?. This has huge potential for high street retailers ? online retailers can use your data to serve you with more relevant information (think of Amazon.com ?people who also bought? accounts for 20% of their sales!). FaceDeals could link the online data of Facebook with offline retailers to provide more relevant offerings.

4. Durex

There?s a few brands who really like to have a lot of fun with their marketing ? Durex is one. This spot from Poland is very clever.

5. Alzheimer?s ?Donate Your Timeline?

September 21st was World Alzheimer?s Day. To mark the occasion Alzheimer?s Disease International brought out an app that temporarily erased your Facebook Timeline. In other words, for one day, you?re entire (Facebook) memory was forgotten ? which is something Alzheimer sufferer?s go through every day.

6. Fed Ex ?Always First?

This is a student project for Fed Ex from the Miami Ad School. It?s not an ad as such but deserves to be. A simple message communicated in a very visual way.

7. NotFound.org

NotFound.org is a campaign by Child Focus to help find missing children. The campaigns asks companies to donate their 404 pages to the organisation so they can advertise missing children. It?s a very interesting connection that?s taking a web page that most companies do nothing with.

8. Grey Poupon ?Society of Good Taste?

Grey Poupon is a mustard brand in the USA. The brand launched a Facebook app that is only accessible by discerning people. If the app deems you to have poor taste in likes, comments, or not as educated as they like ? you don?t get access to exclusive content.

Check if you have good taste here.

?

9. CW Live Twitter Feed in a Magazine

This is a strange mix, a live Twitter feed on a small LED screen in a print magazine. The feed is pulling tweets about new CW TV shows starting this month. The brand is allowing both positive and negative tweets to be displayed, with only tweets featuring swear words not being displayed.

Watch the ad get ripped apart:

10. Harry?s Bottle Message

A bar in Singapore has come up with a very cool way of bringing single people together ? using beer and QR codes. You buy a beer with a tag, scan it, attach a digital message to that tag and then send the beer to the person you want to talk to. They scan you tag and boom! A conversation begins. Since launching in August Harry?s have reported sales of beer amongst those using the app are double than those without.

Northern lights shine amid the moonglow

Jonathan Tucker

Jonathan Tucker's Sept. 30 photo captures the aurora's reflection in the Yukon lake below. For more of Tucker's work, check out Tucker's gallery on 500px.com,

By Alan Boyle

The good news is that the northern lights hit the heights this weekend, with auroral displays visible as far south as Illinois?? and the bad news wasn't all that bad. Sure, the glare of the "Harvest Moon" interfered somewhat, but you could argue that the moonlight added some extra shine to the show.

The northern lights are such a subtle phenomenon that they're best seen from the countryside, far from city lights, and that was the case for Jonathan Tucker, who captured the "September Lights" you see above?on Sunday night, near Whitehorse in Canada's Yukon Territory.

"I was sitting at home, and when I looked out my window I noticed the northern lights were out," he told SpaceWeather.com, "so I grabbed my camera and went to a close spot that would be away from city lights. The auroras didn't last long, but I got this shot."

Meanwhile, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula,?Lake Superior Photo's Shawn Malone was heading home from work and watching the moon rise when he noticed spikes of greenish light to the south.

"Immediately looked to the north, and the sky was on fire," Malone told SpaceWeather.com. "Light every direction, multiple arcs at the same time overhead and to the south?? had a hard time deciding which way to point the camera!"

Another Upper Michigander, Mark Riutta of Defined Visuals, caught what he called a "mild display of aurora activity" over the Portage Canal in Houghton, Mich.

"I wish it was a little better show, but once the almost full moon got higher in the sky, it seemed to diminish the aurora's intensity," Riutta, whose ?told me in an email.

Shawn Malone / LakeSuperiorPhoto.com

The sky is aglow during an auroral display over Michigan's Central Upper Peninsula. For more photos from Shawn Malone, check out LakeSuperiorPhoto.com.

Not to worry, Mark: What you saw was a sight that would make folks like me green with envy. Generally speaking, the best time to see an aurora would be around midnight, from a dark location with clear skies. The higher your latitude, the better. But timing is everything: It does no good to go out to an aurora-viewing spot if there's no aurora. You have to get out and look north (or look south, if you're in Australia, New Zealand or Antarctica) when geomagnetic activity is high?? as it was on Sunday night.

Even if you missed Sunday's show, there are more auroral extravaganzas to come, thanks in part to the current upswing in the 11-year solar activity cycle. Keep a watch on the Space Weather Prediction Center's website and Facebook page?? and for the current word on space weather, as well as pictures from past auroral displays, you can't do any better than SpaceWeather.com.?

Google 1, Theocracy 0: Iranians Successfully Demand Gmail Be Unblocked

gmail-loveIranians?once again enjoy the crushing freedom to spend their days writing emails, deleting spam, and responding to?queries?to "keep in touch." After Iran cut off access to the country's favorite Google services, citizens and officials were united in protest for their love for Gmail, which is now accessible again. The initial block was in?response to an anti-Islamic film on Youtube that caused global unrest, "We wanted to block YouTube, and Gmail was also blocked, which was involuntary," said Iran's telecommunications ministry committee, "We do not yet have enough technical know-how to differentiate between these two services."

Action Sizzles at 40th Annual Poway Rodeo, With Pros From 9 ...

A pleasant breeze kept a modest crowd comfortable for Saturday afternoon?s lineup at the 40th annual Poway Rodeo. The nighttime finale was expected to be a sellout. Under a brilliant sun, ropers, riders and steer wrestlers from at least nine states and two countries (including Michael Maher of Warwick, Queensland, Australia) entertained kids in cowboy hats and their parents and grandparents. Rodeo clown J.J. Harrison kept the cowboys safe and the crowd amused. But the critters had something to say, including one calf who cleverly slowed out of the gate?allowing a roping pair to shoot past on their mounts.?

Netflix Brings ?Just For Kids? UI To The iPad

Netflix_JustForKids_USNetflix has just launched its "Just For Kids" user interface on the iPad, combining two of kids' favorite things: the iPad and cartoons. The Just For Kids UI debuted back in August of 2011, and has since made its way to the Xbox and various Blu-ray players and smart TVs. Children tend to really enjoy the iPad's touch interface, but without any parental controls within the app, you never know when your ten-year-old could go from Phineas & Ferb cartoons to Family Guy.
