India's middle class wants Income Tax limit raised : Postnoon

Raise-the-limit!postnoon-news

A pan-Indian urban survey reveals that salaried people, including those in the private sector,?unanimously feel that their IT limit should be raised?considerably.

A vast majority of the salaried class, employ?ed in a host of trade and industry sectors, want the Finance Minister P Chidambaram to raise the exemption limit of income tax to at least `3 lakh and increase deductions such as medical and educational allowances in the Union budget so that they are left with more purchasing power, a comprehensive Assocham survey across major cities has indicated.

The surveyed cities are: Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahme?dabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Kochi. Titled, Budget 2013: Common man?s expectations from the FM, it examined 2,500 employees from the different sectors.

Over 89 per cent of the respondents said that the slab of tax-free income has not moved up in line with real inflation. The current basic exemption limit of `2,00,000 should be increased to at least `3,00,000, with the limit for women going upto `3,50,000 lakh. This will increase the purchasing power of individuals and stimulate demand.

?Pushing the basic exemption limit will help the tax payers in saving on taxes and also align it with the proposals made by the parliamentary standing committee on the Direct Taxes Code (DTC),? the survey noted.

With increasing healthcare costs, the existing tax-free limit of `15,000 should be increased to `50,000. The same also needs to be considered in the budget, said 89 per cent of the respondents.

Raise-the-limit!1postnoon-news

The transportation allowance granted by the employer to his employee for commuting between the place of work and residence is tax-free to the extent of `800 per month. This limit was fixed more than a decade ago, and definitely needs to be revised upwards to at least `3,000 per month, given the rising commuting costs across the country, adds the survey.

?Additional benefits related to housing, the deduction limit for payment of interest (on self-occupied property) has remained constant at `1,50,000 since 2001. There is an increase in property prices, and accordingly the amount of loan. An increase in the exemption limit to `2,50,000 will be a welcome change,? reveals the survey.

?Section 80C of the IT Act provides a deduction of `1,00,000 for certain investments. This provision helps people in making forced savings that, helps them in the future. A common man expects this limit to be increased to `2,00,000, with sub-limit of `50,000 exclusively for insurance and pension, adds DS Rawat, secretary general Assocham.

Wide spectrum covered

The survey was able to target employees from 18 broad sectors, with the maximum share contributed by employees from IT/ITes sector (17 per cent). After IT/ITeS sector, contribution of the survey respondents from financial services is 11 per cent. Employees working in engineering and telecom sector contributed 9 per cent and 8 per cent respectively in the questionnaire.

Nearly 6 per cent of the employees belonged to market research/KPO and media background each. Management, FMCG and infrastructure sector employees? share is 5 per cent each in the total survey. Respondents from power and the real estate sector contributed 4 per cent each. Employees from education and food and beverages sector provided a share of 3 per cent each. Advertising, manufacturing and textile employees offered a share of 2 per cent each in the survey results.

Around 55 per cent of the survey respondents fall under the age bracket of 25-29 years, followed by 30-39 years (26 per cent), 40-49 years (16 per cent), 50-59 years (2 per cent) and 60-65 years.

?Investments in infrastructure bonds are currently allowed for a deduction up to `20,000. These bonds have proved to be quite popular and the limit should be increased to `50,000 and those withdrawn must be restored, considering that the government needs massive funds for the development of the infrastructure sector. Also, the lock-in period must be restricted to five years,?added 82 per cent respondents.

Over 71 per cent of the respondents demanded that the national pension system (NPS) be brought under the exempt-exempt-exempt (EEE ) as against exempt-exempt-tax (EET) at present. This means that investors get a tax exemption at all three stages of investment, appreciation and withdrawal.?

Can we protect against dangerous space rocks?

A meteor explosion over Russia injured hundreds of people today (Feb. 15), just hours before an asteroid about half the size of a football field gave Earth an extremely close shave, catapulting the need to protect our home planet from hazardous space rocks into the spotlight.?

The two events raise questions about our preparedness for?dangerous encounters with asteroids, and by sheer coincidence one group of scientists has just unveiled plans for a novel system to vaporize asteroids in space that threaten Earth.

"We have to come to grips with discussing these issues in a logical and rational way," UC Santa Barbara physicist Philip M. Lubin said in a statement Thursday (Feb. 14), the day before the Russian meteor explosion.

"We need to be proactive rather than reactive in dealing with threats. Duck and cover is not an option," Lubin added. "We can actually do something about it, and it's credible to do something. So let's begin along this path. Let's start small and work our way up. There is no need to break the bank to start."

The hazards of asteroid impacts are starkly clear in Russia, where more than 900 people were injured and hundreds of buildings damaged by the shockwave from the meteor's explosion in the atmosphere, according to press reports. [Russian Meteor Explosion Injures Hundreds (Video)]

Lubin and his colleagues have conceived of a system they call DE-STAR, or Directed Energy Solar Targeting of Asteroids and exploration. The concept: harness power from the sun and convert it into a massive phased array of laser beams that can deflect or evaporate?asteroids hazardous to Earth.

"This system is not some far-out idea from Star Trek," Gary B. Hughes, a researcher at California Polytechnic State University, said in a statement. "All the components of this system pretty much exist today. Maybe not quite at the scale that we'd need ? scaling up would be the challenge ? but the basic elements are all there and ready to go."

The scale the team has in mind is quite astounding ? ranging from one system the size of a desktop device to one measuring 6 miles (10 kilometers) in diameter ? and the capabilities would improve with each expansion.

DE-STAR 2, for example, would be about 330 feet (100 meters) in diameter, or about the size of the International Space Station, and could nudge comets or asteroids out of their orbits, the team said. Such a system would cost hundreds of millions of dollars, as it would need to be constructed in orbit from smaller pieces, Hughes said in an email to SPACE.com.

Taking a modular approach, the orbital system would keep getting bigger. The researchers envision DE-STAR 4 to be 100 times as big as DE-STAR 2 and say it would be capable of vaporizing a menacing 1,640-foot-wide (500-m) asteroid within a year by beaming it with 1.4 megatons of energy each day.

Hughes added that today's events ? the Russian meteor blast and the unprecedented close approach of asteroid 2102 DA14 ? "should remind us that there are asteroids and comets that cross Earth's orbit which pose a credible risk of impact."

"If we acknowledge the threat of impact, and the potential for severe disturbances to Earth and society, we should be compelled to investigate realistic approaches for mitigating the risk of impact," Hughes said in an email to SPACE.com. "DE-STAR is one such realistic approach, being based on sound concepts and an existing technological base. An orbiting DE-STAR 2 system would allow rapid reaction to smaller threats. A larger system could defuse any threat if detected sufficiently in advance."

The team thinks their ideas could have implications for?asteroid mining?and deep space travel, too. The DE-STAR systems could be a valuable tool for evaluating an asteroid's composition and figuring out which lucrative, rare elements it might hold, such as lanthanum, which is used in the batteries of hybrid cars. And a gigantic system that the team has imagined, DE-STAR 6, could serve as a massive orbiting power source, allowing interstellar travel without a warp drive.

"The ability to focus energy on a distant target would allow acceleration of interplanetary spacecraft," Hughes said. "Our calculations indicate that a 1,000-kg (2,200-pound) spacecraft could be accelerated to Mars and arrive in 15 days. Continuous acceleration could send a spacecraft to relativistic speeds, a tantalizing prospect for interstellar travel."

The team is currently preparing a manuscript on DE-STAR to submit for peer review.

a new opinion in Sports about Reebok Realflex Fusion Tr

As a mum, when I am chasing around after the kids and doing the school run, I usually dress pretty casually in jeans with trainers. When my last pair of trainers developed a hole in them last spring, I decided I needed a new pair, and as I had done the time before when I needed trainers, went online to look at them. I hate shopping and as long as I stick to the reebok brand, I can be pretty confident that I can buy in my usual size and they will fit me. Other brands I have not been as lucky with as they can sometimes be a bit narrow for my feet.

I was drawn to the realflex trainers not because I am a runner like they are intended for, but because they are very funky looking shoes, and the stiking black design I picked with pink sole and laces was very appealing to me visually.

When the trainers arrived in the post from JD sports I was a little wary with my purchase decision. At ?70, they are not a cheap pair of trainers, yet when I took these out of the box, they looked really thin, and I couldn't see how they would not wear out really quickly as there just did not seem to be any padding round the heel in particular.

However, after I had worn these a few times my doubts did start to fade. Putting these on the first time to leave the house, I felt as though I didn't have any shoes on. My feet were so comfortable and the shoes are so light on my feet I can see why runners would choose these as even when I am just walking about at a brisk pace, I feel a bit less sluggish and it is no effort at all to pick up my feet.

I've worn these out and about for whole day trips with the kids, and these are a supportive shoe that remain comfortable even if worn for several hours of activity. The closest I get to running is a brisk walk most days when we are late for school, but I would wear them for sport too as they do feel supportive to my knees and ankles. My knees in particular are prone to pain if my shoes are not supporting me well, and I don't have a problem at all with these shoes.

There are a couple of negatives. These are fabric shoes, which makes them breathable, but not waterproof by any stretch of the imagination. And because they are thin, if it is cold outside then there is no warmth there like you get with leather shoes. Although this does mean your feet have good ventilation on a warmer day. Grip is quite good. I went out when it was frosty in these, but wouldn't risk going out in the rain or snow if I want to stay dry.

Another negative is the sole is designed as a series of rectangular and square projections which remind me a bit of the studs you get on the bottom of football boots. These look great, are flexible when you walk to give good heel-toe action, and give good grip, but when walking on muddy surfaces or pavements that have bits of loose gravel, you end up picking up all kinds of debris on the bottom of your shoe. I then find when I take the shoes off, the flex in the sole means that the shoe bends releasing all these bits of trapped stones on my floors. If I don't notice them and walk on my laminate floor, it could scratch it, so I have to be very careful and take my shoes off straight away. Not a massive hassle as I do that anyway, but it is annoying having to pick stones out my shoe all the time, or if I feel them as I am walking along.

So overall, these look great, they are very supportive, but really they are fair weather shoes. I would wear them for sport as they are supportive and have good grip, but I would be wary about where I went in them, due to them being not waterproof and picking up so much debris from the floor.

Summary: I feel a lot fitter wearing these even if I don't put the thought into much action

USC battery wields silicon nanowires to hold triple the energy, charge in 10 minutes

There's no shortage of attempts to build a better battery, usually with a few caveats. USC may have ticked all the right checkboxes with its latest discovery, however. Its use of porous, flexible silicon nanowires for the anodes in a lithium-ion battery delivers the high capacity, fast recharging and low costs that come with silicon, but without the fragility of earlier attempts relying on simpler silicon plates. In practice, the battery could deliver the best of all worlds. Triple the capacity of today's batteries? Full recharges in 10 minutes? More than 2,000 charging cycles? Check. It all sounds a bit fantastical, but USC does see real-world use on the horizon. Researchers estimate that there should be products with silicon-equipped lithium-ion packs inside of two to three years, which isn't long to wait if the invention saves us from constantly hunting for the nearest wall outlet.

Minnesota Upsets Wisconsin In Overtime, 58-53

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eight minutes and 48 seconds without scoring.

Eleven minutes and one second without making a basket.

When Wisconsin's third straight overtime game ended in defeat for the first time, the Badgers had an unsightly series of bad possessions to blame.

Andre Hollins hit the go-ahead 3-pointer midway through overtime to finish with 21 points and lead Minnesota to a 58-53 victory over No. 20 Wisconsin on Thursday night.

From Ben Brust's jumper with 6:11 left in regulation until Jared Berggren's putback with 10 seconds remaining in the extra period, the Badgers didn't hit a shot ? making only four free throws in that stretch.

"The intensity ratchets up," Berggren said. "They increased their pressure defensively. They got the crowd into it. We probably got a little bit tentative."

Hollins went 4 for 4 from the free throw line over the final 18 seconds of overtime to seal it for the Gophers (18-7, 6-6 Big Ten). Sam Dekker scored 14 points and Brust added 11 points for the Badgers. They were 7 for 28 from 3-point range, negating 18 offensive rebounds.

Ryan Evans missed all five free throws he took in that decisive scoreless drought, dropping his season free throw percentage to 40.3

"You knew it was going to get us one game. Hopefully not two. What can you say?" coach Bo Ryan said.

Hollins hit his big shot with 3:38 remaining to give the Gophers a 52-49 lead. Trevor Mbakwe, who grabbed two huge rebounds in the closing minutes, tacked on two free throws to stretch the lead to five with 1:32 left.

The game was tied at 43 with just inside 8 minutes left in regulation, but the Badgers couldn't make much work after that.

Senior Mike Bruesewitz, playing in his home state for the final time, had a hand in the collapse, too. He missed a long 3-pointer with the Badgers leading 49-47 but drew a charge against Austin Hollins with 22.6 seconds left on the other end to get the ball back.

On the inbounds play, however, he moved his feet and was called for a violation.

"I've been in that position a hundred times, if not more," Bruesewitz said. "They called it, and that was the game."

The Gophers regained possession when Joe Coleman made both free throws with 17.4 seconds to tie it, and Traevon Jackson's runner in the lane bricked off the back of the trim.

"That's a tough turnover," Ryan said. "But we still had some other chances."

The Badgers were brimming with momentum, after beating then-No. 3 Michigan last weekend when Brust made a half-court shot to tie the game at the end of regulation. That came on the heels of the double-overtime win over Iowa. And not that long ago, they went to Indiana and came away with a five-point victory.

Cracking The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since mid-November, Wisconsin was in position to keep moving up in the conference stqandings and sweep rival Minnesota for the second straight season.

The Gophers weren't ahead until 13:48 remained in the game, when Andre Hollins made two free throws for a 35-33 lead. Two minutes later, Mbakwe spun out of the post and threw down a baseline dunk to make it 37-35, igniting the home crowd. For the first time in weeks, the Gophers appeared to be playing with confidence when they had the ball.

The Badgers only had themselves to blame for that, after failing to break the game open early.

The Gophers missed 12 of their first 14 shots, and the two makes were dunks. They went nearly 6 1/2 minutes without scoring until Austin Hollins found a crease and sank a pull-up jumper in the lane to cut the lead to 12-6. Mbakwe was all but taken out of the offense, hounded by Jared Berggren and the Badgers' lane-clogging defense. Mbakwe was called for traveling once and three seconds in the lane to end another possession.

The Gophers guarded well enough themselves to stay in the game, though. Without any room to cut or drive, the ability to hit those outside shots became even more paramount. Bruesewitz, Jackson and Brust each made 3-pointers before halftime, but the Badgers missed 10.

On the other end, Austin Hollins sank one for the Gophers, and Andre Hollins hit two, none more important than his stutter-step launch from the top of the key with 8 seconds left that brought Minnesota within 24-22.

About a minute before that, Austin Hollins soared into the lane to pull down a rebound of Joe Coleman's miss with one hand, then flip his put-back in off the glass to cut the lead to five.
