Supreme Court justices' families less nuclear, more diverse like US

US Supreme Court justice families aren't as traditional as some would assume. In fact, their family life is increasingly like ours.

Members of the court have firsthand experience with divorce and adoption, as well as making it alone without ever getting married. Just five of the nine justices have been married once and have had biological children with their spouses.
"The diversity of the family lives of the justices mirrors the diversity of American families overall," said Andrew Cherlin, a Johns Hopkins University sociologist who studies families and public policy.
These varied family portraits of the justices are somewhat at odds with the arguments of gay marriage opponents who stress the unique ability of heterosexual couples to have babies as a reason to uphold bans on same-sex marriage.
The briefs defending California's Proposition 8 gay marriage ban and a federal law denying benefits to legally married gay couples are sprinkled with references to the ideal family as having a mother, a father, and biological children.
"Proposition 8 thus plainly bears a close and direct relationship to society's interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who brought them into the world in stable and enduring family units," the provision's supporters say.
The conservative, public-interest Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., puts it this way: "Reserving marriage to a man and a woman thus reflects the inherent distinction between those pairs capable of engaging in the act which can produce human offspring, and those pairs which cannot."
The two justices who have adopted children are considered likely votes against gay marriage. Chief Justice John Roberts is the father of two children, Jack and Josie, both 12. They were adopted four months apart as babies in 2000, after Roberts and his wife, Jane, then 45, spent several years trying to adopt. The Roberts family discussed the adoption for a biography of the chief justice that was aimed at young readers and published in 2006.
Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Virginia, took custody of Thomas's grandnephew, Mark, when he was 6, in 1998. Soon after they were married in 1987, the Thomases decided they would not have children of their own, author Ken Foskett wrote in his biography, "Judging Thomas." Mark's father had been in and out of legal trouble and his mother was raising three other children on her own. Thomas also has a biological child from his first marriage, which ended in divorce.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor also is divorced, while Justice Elena Kagan has never married. Neither has children.

Dustin Moskovitz And Cari Tuna Launch Site For Their Philanthropic Foundation, Good Ventures
We?ve heard a little bit about Facebook and Asana co-founder Dustin Moskovitz?s new foundation, Good Ventures, specifically a company that the firm invested in last August. Today we’ve learned a lot more, as the site for Good Ventures has been launched, and it discusses exactly what the foundation will be doing and which companies and causes it’s currently involved in. Its “portfolio” reads like a list of every difficult problem felt in third-world countries, and it’s expansive already. Just some of the issues that Good Ventures has issued grants for are curing and treating malaria, marriage equality, wells for clean drinking water, and small enterprise support. The grants seem to average $50,000 and are going directly to the causes that need it the most. Good Ventures was co-founded by Moskovitz and former Wall Street Journal reporter Cari Tuna. The about us page on the site describes their mission clearly and concisely: Good Ventures is a philanthropic foundation whose mission is to help humanity thrive. Here’s an excerpt from their intro letter on their reason for creating the foundation: We?ve seen human well-being increase dramatically in recent decades. Quality of life is rising and violence is declining. At the same time, humanity is becoming better networked, technologically, economically and socially. We?re optimistic that these trends will continue ? even accelerate ? in the decades to come. Our giving, leveraged well, can quicken the pace of humanity?s progress and mitigate the risks that threaten to derail it. Our giving can increase the human capital on which society has to draw. Our giving can prevent unnecessary suffering by ensuring that the fruits of our collective labor benefit those who are most marginalized today. While it doesn’t look like investments or grants will be systematic like one from a regular venture capital firm, it does seem like the organization gives Moskovitz and Tuna the platform to drive change by placing money directly with causes. For example, Good Ventures set out to co-fund based on a recommendation by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation last August. Mickey Hart's childhood memories of the Jersey Shore inspired him to write a benefit song (HERE) for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and it's coming in a little later than the first wave of benefits for a reason. "I knew that it would need an afterburner. When I saw Bon Jovi, Brian Williams and all those people one one broadcast -- I was affected. Five minutes later, there was the song. It's not Mozart (he laughs) but it's very well intentioned and it's done with emotional content. Also trying to give you a sense of place with the buoy kind of sounds ... it kind of makes you feel like you're..."
At the shore?
"Yeah. It's important because you see the shore is different than any other place. Shore towns, people come to enjoy life and be a community. "If you can affect something and you see something you can affect in some small way you have to go after it. I sort of feel the same way about this. I have great expectations but even if it helps one person get through the night, get through the tragedy, I will be so so happy. I tell him I remember the songs that flowed from and to New Orleans as we recovered.
"That's what music can do. It heals. You know, it heals the soul and makes you want to find victory over adversity. That's what song does, it brings the spirit up. It elevates the human spirit. Without the human spirit you might as well crawl under the covers and die. Once the spirit is gone you become a vegetable. You really can't function. So the idea is to keep the spirit healthy, right? Music's a tuning system. That's what music really does, it tunes you into the world around you and into yourself. And to others. That's what music really does. It's just vibrations. Controlled vibrations, but they're very powerful.
Speaking of which, he's just back in the studio after a tour with African Showboyz of Ghana.
"Wow, talk about vibrations. These guys are a thundering horde of drummers. It's beautiful. You've got seven drummers just really laying it down dirty so it's a real thrill with the African Showboyz. And the band's a joy. It's great to play every day with them."
I put in a request for a New Orleans stop on any future tour. When I last saw him he was headed to Congo Square to drum for an afternoon, which sounds about right. Mickey's back in the studio now, and I wished him luck shaking his cold as I shook off mine.
"We'll get it. stay with it."

Tougher competition awaits Woods at Match Play

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) ? Tiger Woods should not expect his next match to be as easy as his last one.
For starters, President Barack Obama was his partner three days ago at The Floridian, which is not to suggest the president had to carry the 14-time major champion. Secondly, Woods won't be competing against a Houston businessman (Jim Crane) and outgoing U.S. Trade Representative (Ron Kirk), but Charles Howell III, who gave Woods fits as a teenager in the 1996 U.S. Amateur.
Woods is a three-time winner of the Match Play Championship who has a 33-9 record in this tournament alone.
And even he knows it won't be easy.
"The whole idea is just to beat one guy at a time," Woods said. "That's the thing. There are times where I've played well in matches and I've lost, and other times where I've played poorly and advanced. It's pot luck in these 18-hole sprints like this. As I said, it's imperative to get off to a quick start and get up on your opponent early. It's just so hard to come back in 18-hole matches, and hopefully, I can do that conceivably for all six."
It all starts Wednesday at Dove Mountain, the first World Golf Championship of the year.
Rory McIlroy is the No. 1 seed and will play Shane Lowry, a longtime friend and former partner on the Irish team that won the European Team Championships in 2007. In a similar match, former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland) plays three-time major champion Padraig Harrington (Ireland).
The toughest challenge might be the weather, with a front expected to move across the high desert overnight and bringing temperatures so low that light snow is possible. At best, it figures to be frigid for the morning matches as the sun is beginning to climb over The Ritz-Carlton Club at Dove Mountain.
"No one likes to play in adverse weather," said Ian Poulter, playing for first time since Hawaii, when the tournament took four days to start because of 40 mph wind.
Woods said he would be used to the wind and cold because that's what he dealt with in Florida with the president.
It was the second time Woods has played with a sitting U.S. president ? he once played with former President Bill Clinton at The Alotian Club in Arkansas.
"Playing with Mr. President was pretty cool," he said. "He's just a wonderful person to be around."
Woods doesn't use "Mr." with hardly anyone. In fact, he has a nickname for most people in golf. He'll shorten the surname ("Poults" for Poulter, "Stricks" for Steve Stricker) or simply add a "y'' to their name ("Rosey" for Justin Rose). And what name did he use for the leader of the free world?
"Partner," Woods said with a smile.
He sounded surprised to learn that Obama played left-handed, and when asked to describe the president's best shot, Woods said that "he hit a few."
"He's a pretty good athlete, and we all know he played a lot of hoops," Woods said. "He's a lefty, but to see him out there hitting shots ... he hit it well, and we didn't play under the easiest conditions. It was blowing harder than this, and it was a little bit cooler than this. So we played under some tough conditions, and as I said, he hit the ball well. He's got amazing touch. He can certainly chip and putt."
That's the key for anyone in match play.
Luke Donald has one of the best short games in golf, which explains why he won two years ago in the most dominant performance in the 14-year history of this event. Donald is the only player to have never reached the 18th hole in any of his matches.
As for the fickle nature of match play?
Donald didn't even make it out of the first round last year against Ernie Els.
Woods is coming off a four-shot win at Torrey Pines three weeks ago, after opening his 2013 season by missing the cut in Abu Dhabi.
He took an entire week off from golf, and then resumed practicing to get ready for a busy part of his schedule leading up to the Masters. This is the first of three straight tournaments for Woods, a stretch in which he would have a mathematical chance of going back to No. 1.
All 64 players in the field are so close in ability that there is no such thing as an upset in this event, not like a Grand Slam tennis event or the NCAA basketball tournament.
Howell is the No. 63 seed, though his stock has been improving. He began the year with three straight finishes in the top 10, which enabled him to go from outside the top 100 in the world and qualify for this elite tournament.
Woods and Howell were partners at the Presidents Cup for all four matches in 2003, and Woods used to practice with him when he lived in Orlando, Fla. They first squared off in the quarterfinals of the 1996 U.S. Amateur, which Woods won on his way to a record third straight title. Howell has made a lasting impression over the years.
"You'd see him out there on the range and the putting green just grinding away," Woods said. "His work ethic has never changed, never waned. He's out there working all the time. He's trying to get better. I admire guys who put in that kind of work. It's not easy to do, and he's implemented some swing changes over the years, but his tireless work ethic is something we all look up to."
No one has played fewer rounds this year than McIlroy and McDowell.
Wednesday will be only the third competitive round in three months for McIlroy, who missed the cut in Abu Dhabi and has not played since then. McDowell returned from his long winter break last week at Riviera and missed the cut by one shot.
"I don't feel like I'm a guy that needs to play his way into form," McIlroy said. "I think I just practice, and if I feel like I'm confident on the range and hitting it well and playing well in practice rounds, then that'll translate into shooting good scores on the course."
Scores aren't necessarily important at Dove Mountain. This week is only about having a better score than the opponent.
