Brain Scans Predict Who's Likely To Be A Repeat Offender

In research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists found brain scans can predict with startling accuracy the likelihood that criminals will run afoul of the law again. The results require serious legal and ethical debate before being introduced into the criminal justice system. David Greene talks to Kent Kiehl, a professor of psychology at the University of New Mexicow, and lead author of this mind research study.

'Arrested Development' premieres May 26 on Netflix

NEW YORK (AP) ? "Arrested Development" will be reborn on Netflix on May 26.

The subscription service announced the premiere date Thursday, saying that all 15 episodes of the comedy series will be posted at the same time. The Mitchell Hurwitz sitcom starring Jason Bateman was canceled by Fox in 2006 after three seasons.

"Arrested Development" is the most eagerly anticipated original series from Netflix following the political thriller "House of Cards," which debuted in February.

In a statement, Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos says the return of the cultishly beloved "Arrested Development" ''is sure to make history all over again."

In response, Hurwitz joked that Sarandos is "going to be immensely disappointed."

A Short Guide to Writing Good Copy | Copyblogger

Image of Copyblogger Copywriting 101 Logo

The term ?style? is thrown around a lot by writers, but it?s a misnomer for copywriters because ?style? doesn?t work in the extremely short attention economy of the internet.

Good copy isn?t necessarily ?stylish.?

But copy that establishes trust, authority, builds relationships, and gets people talking, sharing, and buying is in high demand.

A lack of style is what makes it work, so writers who master this ?style? are sought after and revered.

Legendary ad man David Ogilvy was one of those writers, and he said, ?A good advertisement is one which sells the product without drawing attention to itself.?

It sounds counterintuitive, but it holds up under pressure, and I?ll explain why great content marketing is built on that exact premise.

Clear communication is the key to effective copy

Your best copy needs to be ?display window clear,? and you need to be out there every morning with your Windex, to make sure it doesn?t distract from the product or service you provide for your clients and customers.

Every writer eventually reaches for a style guide to help them craft clear copy, and there are countless helpful rulebooks and list posts that offer writers advice about proper usage and consistent language.

Copyblogger actually has its own internal style guide, and members of the editorial crew often squabble about usage over (virtual) martinis.

I am also a big fan of the classic English guidebook, The Elements of Style by Strunk & White. The aged copy I keep handy is dog-eared and yellowing.

In it, William Strunk advises writers,

A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.

This is very solid advice for online publishers ? from 1918!

A copywriter comes to the rescue

It was actually famed writer E. B. White who updated professor Strunk?s ?little? 43 page English rulebook in 1959.

He revived it from scholastic obscurity to become what Time magazine has called ?one of the 100 best and most influential books written in English since 1923.?

E. B. White was more than a revered journalist (contributor to the New Yorker for 60 years), and award-winning children?s author (Charlotte?s Web).

He honed his writing style as a copywriter in the 1920s, and contributed what he learned to The Elements of Style re-issue in chapter V, ?An Approach to Style.?

It?s no secret why this revered text is so short, and so effective.

Mr. White edited the style guide with some reluctance, and was quoted years later as saying,

My role in the revival of Strunk?s book was a fluke ? just something I took on because I was not doing anything else at the time. It cost me a year out of my life, so little did I know about grammar.

Make every word tell

White?s lack of grammatical knowledge did not prevent the guide from becoming a bestseller for the better part of the last 50 years.

In interviews, White wanted to remind writers that rules are meant to be broken, and that every writer has their own unique point of view and voice.

Style results more from what a person is than from what he knows.

In other words, every writer can memorize rules, but how you get people?s attention requires some creativity.

Don?t get too hung up on the rules, or your copy might end up sucking, and that would break the first rule of Copyblogger.

In honor of E. B. White I have updated Dean Rieck?s post The Ultimate Blogger Writing Guide.

This list is only a sampling of the vast amount of knowledge available to online publishers and content marketers, but they are a few things that have helped me most along the way.

What I present to you is an annotated guide to effective online copywriting ?style? ?

1. Headline Writing 101

Every writer who wants to make an impact online must take this clinic.

There is only one reason your client or prospect will read a single word of the copy you?ve written: your headline. This is where you should spend 70% of your time.

Start with the 4 U?s:

  • Useful
  • Urgent
  • Unique
  • Ultra-Specific

2. Use common spelling

Flourishes and variations of common words distract your readers and pull them out of the story you?re telling (unless your demographic is girls aged 7-13).

Avoid:

  • pleez for please
  • thru for through
  • nite for night
  • 2moro for tomorrow
  • @ for at

Tweets and text messages require some brevity, slang, and LOL acronyms, but connecting with your audience in longer copy requires fewer distractions.

3. Avoid hyperbole and fancy words

One of the first lessons I learned as a writer at Copyblogger was to tone down my language.

Good copy cuts like a knife. When it?s action you?re after, avoid big words that make you sound like you?re trying too hard to sound smart or important.

E. B. White said it best,

Do not be tempted by a twenty-dollar word, when there is a ten-center handy ?

4. Put the reader first

It is our job as copywriters to tap into the hopes, dreams, and fears of our audience. This requires research, and the magic of the word ?you.?

Proven to be one of the English language?s most powerful words, you can?t lose.

5. Write in a natural way

This is an indispensable tip for all bloggers and copywriters.

You must speak the language of your audience, and do it in a way that conveys you are a real person, with genuine interest in offering your help and expertise.

How else are your prospects going to get to know, like, and trust you?

How else are search engines going to recognize that you have the answers to peoples questions?

Research, research, research. Know your audience inside and out.

6. Work from an outline

Outlines work! Even if you don?t have the energy or time to sketch out a simple AIDA outline, give yourself some idea of the goals you?d like to accomplish is helpful.

Even something as simple as a post-it-note with a few bullet points works. Successful writers use outlines. They don?t stifle creativity ? but they?re helpful in reminding you to stick to the point.

7. Write with nouns and verbs

This is Copywriting 101 ? Precise language convinces; flowery language distracts.

Concise and specific copy moves the prospect along, but adjectives and adverbs are just filler.

The more descriptors you throw in there, the higher the chances are that someone with the attention span of a hummingbird will click away (unless you are describing the features of something technical).

8. Revise and rewrite

Ogilvy is quoted as saying,

I am a lousy copywriter, but I am a good editor.

He would edit his first draft four or five times before showing it to a client, who would inevitably change it again.

9. Do not overwrite

Without clarity your copy is shot. Overwriting is a symptom of under thinking. Good copy is damn hard to write.

If you can?t explain it simply, you don?t understand it well enough.
~ Albert Einstein

10. Do not overstate

Superlatives have the power to wreck your copy.

When you overstate or exaggerate your claims (with things like trumped-up testimonials), you risk losing the trust of your audience.

An understated promise often does a better job of capturing reader attention than screaming hype does.

11. Be clear

Shine that display glass.

Do some editing. Then put it down and do something else. Then, come back and edit again.

I?ve found that printing something out on paper helps lessen distractions of a computer screen.

12. Don?t mix metaphors

If a product sings when used correctly, but sinks if used improperly, then it is guilty of being both a songstress and an anchor, and this is very distracting.

Stick to one metaphor or the other, but not both in one sentence.

13. Simplify your language:

Make every word tell.

Delete the words that are just window dressing.

Copy is haiku,
simple yet evocative.
Don?t mess it up, please.

I am a copywriter

As an added bonus I?d like to share Tom Albrighton?s infographic I am a copywriter (thanks to Copyblogger?s VP of Operations Jessica Commins for finding it) ?
??

It sums it up rather nicely.

Funny how such simple blocks of text can communicate so much.

I especially dig the phrase ?Give me just a mo and I?ll give you le mot juste,? which is a French term for ?just the right word.?

Does it do the job it?s meant to? Drop your reactions into the comments.

PS. Let me reiterate that rules are meant to be broken, and I am as guilty as anyone. Cheers, see you out there.

PSA HTC One preorders start at AT&T today, Sprint tomorrow

You've been eying the HTC One's zero-gap body for well over a month, and now it's your chance to do something about it. AT&T is launching its promised pre-order campaign for the One today: soon, if not as you read this, upgraders and new subscribers can plunk down as little as $200 for a 32GB model or $300 for the network-exclusive 64GB edition. While these buyers likely won't get their phones until closer to the April 19th store date, that free Media Link HD offer remains on the table to encourage an early commitment. And those who prefer service from the House of Hesse don't have long to wait, either -- Sprint's pre-orders for the One begin tomorrow, with a similar $200 outlay involved for the 32GB variant. All that's left is for T-Mobile's edition to follow suit.

How To Stop Your Marriage From Falling Apart | World of Psychology

Relationship Tune-Up: How to Stop Your Marriage from Falling Apart This guest article from YourTango was written by?Harville Hendrix & Helen LaKelly Hunt.

Falling in love can be amazing! The excitement of meeting someone new brings out the best in all of us; the journey ahead feels like an open road full of possibility.

But then something happens: Either the relationship starts to feel stale, or perhaps money issues, kids, or trying to figure out a comfortable work-life balance comes into play. Whatever the cause, the initial spark dims or goes out altogether, and the future of your relationship becomes a long and winding road, full of pit stops and flat tires.

Well, don?t worry because this happens to everyone. All it means is that it?s time for a tune-up.

You see, we spend a lot of time and energy finding our perfect mates. By the time we say ?I do,? we assume (and fervently hope) that the work is over. The idea of having to spend time working on your marriage may seem strange or even depressing, but it?s worth it! Even if it feels like your whole marriage needs an overhaul, deepening your relationship doesn?t have to be a grueling process. With the right tools, the suffering can end.

One of the best ways to help your marriage is to ensure you?re thinking about it the right way. After working with thousands of couples ? and on our own marriage ? we?ve distilled some essential truths that help couples keep their relationships fresh as they navigate the life-long experience of growing real love:

1. Conflict is growth trying to happen.

Most people believe that if you?re having problems in your marriage, you?re with the wrong person. So, when conflict gets heated and gnarly, they wonder if it?s time to bail ? and it?s not! Rather, if you?re willing to work with the conflict, there is something wonderful and amazing waiting for you right around the corner. The key is learning how to work with conflict creatively ? in ways that help both you and your partner grow. Plus, just changing your perspective so that you view conflict as an opportunity, an indicator that it?s time to grow, can help ease the troubles you ?re having.

2. It?s not him; it?s you.

Ninety percent of the upset you feel with your partner comes from your past. It?s true! So, stop blaming your partner. We know that it?s hard to do ? especially when you feel miserable and it seems as though the source of your misery is, well, that annoying person you?re married to. But here?s the thing: We fall head over heels in love with someone who is similar to our parents, which is a mysterious design that holds the potential for deep, abiding connection ? once you get past all the squabbling. So, the next time you feel your blood boiling, remind yourself: This feeling has more to do with my past than my partner!

3. A laugh a day keeps the divorce lawyer away.

Sometimes we?re so busy working on our relationships that we actually forget to enjoy them. And what?s the point of doing all of that work if you?re not having fun with your partner? Using humor and joy is critical to a couple?s happiness together. Now, this doesn?t mean you get to dust off your passive-aggressive tendencies and use ?humor? to zing your partner with little digs or critiques. What it means is that you have our permission to go out and have fun. So, create fun times together by mixing things up a little. Try dance lessons, improv, a cooking class.

When we decided to bring the fun back into our relationship, we cooked a whole meal together wearing Groucho Marx glasses. Of course we felt silly ? and that was the whole point!

4. Want to spice up your relationship? Ditch all negativity!

Why are we so inclined to focus on what?s bad instead of what?s good? Every relationship (including ours, once upon a time) contains at least some negativity, and the amount of negativity in a relationship is directly proportional to the amount of trouble it?s in. Negativity includes any/all words, tone of voice, facial expressions and/or behavior your partner says feels negative to him/her. And yes, rolling your eyes counts.

You see, negativity is like rat poison; nothing can grow in it! So, if you want your relationship to grow, you?ve got to get rid of all negativity. Yes, all of it. We finally did, and in fact, our zero tolerance policy is the single most effective strategy we?ve used to create real love.

These truths can help you become better partners for each other, and to create a marriage full of real, lasting love and a blissful connection.

Modestep: Evolution Theory | PopMatters

Modestep theorize that angry, bass-washed pop might evolve record sales.

The regional lines have been blurring lately with dubstep music. It used to be that you could listen to a track and identify its geographic origins with the precision of a GPS system. Certain scenes gave rise to certain sounds, but those sounds have finally begun to transcend geographic boundaries over the last couple of years. But there is one particular sound that seems to be entirely unique to UK tastes, and it?s hard to imagine it breaking in North America, despite its being embraced by the mighty Interscope records. It?s the brand of dubstep that?s a little too heavy on the cheese for the American heads, whose tastes have been shaped by the hard filth doled out by Excision, Skrillex, Datsik, Bare, and the other dubstep weapons of mass destruction.

Coming out of the UK is a schizophrenic drumstep pacing with soulful anthemic vocal hooks repeated ad nauseum right up to and through a cliff-like bass drop into the squelchy abyss. It?s the sound that dominates Modestep?s ironically named Evolution Theory. I say ironic because it?s a sound that hasn?t changed much since it gained popularity with Flux Pavilion?s ?Cracks??and Nero?s and ?Promises? just a few short years ago. This is dubstep?s most formulaic offering, and it?s hard not to be cynical on first listen. Those of us who review music have a tendency to go straight for the jugular when something sounds too familiar. But now that I?ve put it in context and gotten the too cool bravado off my chest: I actually enjoy some moments of the record. The lead track is the highlight of the record, despite its being almost entirely chorus.

As any good lead track should, ?Show me a Sign? shows you a sign of exactly what the record will offer and it proves to have compass-like accuracy. The quiet organ riff slowly builds as the drippy pop vocals of Josh Friend croon, in what sounds like a fake patois, ?Someone raise a light up / Light up the sky above / If you?re with me now show me a sign.? I should note here that I am only speculating as to the insincerity of the patois?Josh is white, British, and his last name is ?Friend?. Though it?s entirely possible that the Friend family recently immigrated from Jamaica, I am going to say the odds are in my favor that he?s merely pulling a Snow on this line. It?s delivered over a textbook dubstep stutter and seems handcrafted to make the club kids go absolutely mental. Played in your home on a high volume I suspect it may have the same effect on your neighbors. There?s no doubt it was written with the live performance in mind.? Don?t believe me? Listen for the genuine Klaxon sample.

The record is full of would-be and probably will-be radio singles like ?Sunrise? and ?Praying for Silence?. As a crossover it mixes the popular appeal of a boy band aesthetic and trite songwriting with undeniably catchy melodies and the requisite wall-shaking bass. If that?s not enough for you, there?s some grimey hip hop on ?Another Day? and ?Evolution Theory?. I didn?t find the rhymes particularly compelling, but I have to say that one of the finer details on the record was the intermittent wobble which appeared far too briefly in the background on this title track.

There is one other detail which is very notable on the record: the introduction to the genre of the first unironic metal guitar solo. Does a heavy-hitting (albeit with gloved hands) dubstep track need a rock guitar solo to take it up a notch? Absolutely not. In this case it goes a little sideways. My apologies to guitarist Nick Tsang. It?s not that I want to cast doubt on his considerable talent. These don?t appear to be purely sampled guitar licks, after all, so let?s give credit where credit is due. But the addition of a filtered, somewhat muted Corgan-esque guitar solo in a pop melody saturated with bass drive was enough to activate a latent cheese intolerance. It appears most notably on ?Freedom?, ?To the Stars?, and ?Time?, the latter of which, taken out of the album?s context, could be the demo track for the high school rock band that Modestep would have been in the absence of the best in electronic music production software.

Bass music is expected to go low, but the truly low point on this record is ?Feel Good?.? It conjures images of music heard in rural plazas or elevators where musicians anonymously contribute their lesser works to easily digestible compilations of shopping mall-targeted mediocrity. Is that a little dubstep breakdown I hear in the appliance department?

Thankfully, the rest of the album carries the weight of this previous transgression. And let?s be honest, if you picked up this record, you picked it up because you heard ?Show me a Sign? remixed on a BBC Radio 1, because you?re a 15-year-old boy who happened to catch the leather-clad beauties on the ?80s-era video, or because you simply don?t know any better. But now that you?ve read this, that?s no longer a valid reason.

Comeback Watch: Mark Sanford Wins South Carolina Primary

Stage two of Mark Sanford's political comeback is complete.

The former South Carolina governor, who ended his term tarnished by one of the most sensational political sex scandals in recent memory, has won the Republican primary to become the party's candidate for the U.S. House seat he represented in the 1990s.

Sanford bested attorney and former Charleston County Council member Curtis Bostic, The Associated Press has determined.

With 97 percent reporting, Sanford took 57 percent to Bostic's 43 percent.

Sanford will face Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of Comedy Central personality Stephen Colbert, in a May 7 general election, which isn't considered a lock, despite the First District's Republican voting tradition.

It's tough to know whether this was a good, great, or mediocre night for Sanford, who enjoys near-universal recognition after serving as governor, but who topped his main GOP rival by 13 percentage points.
