As you probably know by now, I?m a big supporter of picking up a second (or third, or fourth) language. While I learned Spanish and French for purely academic reasons (read: my university forced me to double major so I made a panic decision and chose Romance languages), there?s been a fringe benefit: knowing a language other than English has made traveling the world so much easier and more enjoyable. But with a multitude of languages to choose from, how does a traveler who is actually setting out to improve their travels pick the one that will give them the most bang for their buck?
This infographic from Matador can help you decide. By charting where around the world the ten most common languages are spoken, the map below acts as a nice reference for how to go about picking a secondary language. For instance, if you dream of touring the Middle East someday, you should probably put learning Chinese sentence structure on the back burner and jump right into one or all of the 30 languages that comprise Arabic. That seems pretty self explanatory, but if you look at the map you?ll notice that Arabic is also widely spoken throughout Africa, Europe, and North America, so your new found skill will be beneficial on other trips as well.
Peruse the map of where the world?s most common languages are spoken below, and do yourself a favor by buying the Rosetta Stone for one. Believe me, it?s a not simpler than paying $ 250,000 on a degree in a language that didn?t even make the list.?Merde!
