MARANA, Ariz. (AP) ? Tiger Woods should not expect his next match to be as easy as his last one.

For starters, President Barack Obama was his partner three days ago at The Floridian, which is not to suggest the president had to carry the 14-time major champion. Secondly, Woods won't be competing against a Houston businessman (Jim Crane) and outgoing U.S. Trade Representative (Ron Kirk), but Charles Howell III, who gave Woods fits as a teenager in the 1996 U.S. Amateur.

Woods is a three-time winner of the Match Play Championship who has a 33-9 record in this tournament alone.

And even he knows it won't be easy.

"The whole idea is just to beat one guy at a time," Woods said. "That's the thing. There are times where I've played well in matches and I've lost, and other times where I've played poorly and advanced. It's pot luck in these 18-hole sprints like this. As I said, it's imperative to get off to a quick start and get up on your opponent early. It's just so hard to come back in 18-hole matches, and hopefully, I can do that conceivably for all six."

It all starts Wednesday at Dove Mountain, the first World Golf Championship of the year.

Rory McIlroy is the No. 1 seed and will play Shane Lowry, a longtime friend and former partner on the Irish team that won the European Team Championships in 2007. In a similar match, former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland) plays three-time major champion Padraig Harrington (Ireland).

The toughest challenge might be the weather, with a front expected to move across the high desert overnight and bringing temperatures so low that light snow is possible. At best, it figures to be frigid for the morning matches as the sun is beginning to climb over The Ritz-Carlton Club at Dove Mountain.

"No one likes to play in adverse weather," said Ian Poulter, playing for first time since Hawaii, when the tournament took four days to start because of 40 mph wind.

Woods said he would be used to the wind and cold because that's what he dealt with in Florida with the president.

It was the second time Woods has played with a sitting U.S. president ? he once played with former President Bill Clinton at The Alotian Club in Arkansas.

"Playing with Mr. President was pretty cool," he said. "He's just a wonderful person to be around."

Woods doesn't use "Mr." with hardly anyone. In fact, he has a nickname for most people in golf. He'll shorten the surname ("Poults" for Poulter, "Stricks" for Steve Stricker) or simply add a "y'' to their name ("Rosey" for Justin Rose). And what name did he use for the leader of the free world?

"Partner," Woods said with a smile.

He sounded surprised to learn that Obama played left-handed, and when asked to describe the president's best shot, Woods said that "he hit a few."

"He's a pretty good athlete, and we all know he played a lot of hoops," Woods said. "He's a lefty, but to see him out there hitting shots ... he hit it well, and we didn't play under the easiest conditions. It was blowing harder than this, and it was a little bit cooler than this. So we played under some tough conditions, and as I said, he hit the ball well. He's got amazing touch. He can certainly chip and putt."

That's the key for anyone in match play.

Luke Donald has one of the best short games in golf, which explains why he won two years ago in the most dominant performance in the 14-year history of this event. Donald is the only player to have never reached the 18th hole in any of his matches.

As for the fickle nature of match play?

Donald didn't even make it out of the first round last year against Ernie Els.

Woods is coming off a four-shot win at Torrey Pines three weeks ago, after opening his 2013 season by missing the cut in Abu Dhabi.

He took an entire week off from golf, and then resumed practicing to get ready for a busy part of his schedule leading up to the Masters. This is the first of three straight tournaments for Woods, a stretch in which he would have a mathematical chance of going back to No. 1.

All 64 players in the field are so close in ability that there is no such thing as an upset in this event, not like a Grand Slam tennis event or the NCAA basketball tournament.

Howell is the No. 63 seed, though his stock has been improving. He began the year with three straight finishes in the top 10, which enabled him to go from outside the top 100 in the world and qualify for this elite tournament.

Woods and Howell were partners at the Presidents Cup for all four matches in 2003, and Woods used to practice with him when he lived in Orlando, Fla. They first squared off in the quarterfinals of the 1996 U.S. Amateur, which Woods won on his way to a record third straight title. Howell has made a lasting impression over the years.

"You'd see him out there on the range and the putting green just grinding away," Woods said. "His work ethic has never changed, never waned. He's out there working all the time. He's trying to get better. I admire guys who put in that kind of work. It's not easy to do, and he's implemented some swing changes over the years, but his tireless work ethic is something we all look up to."

No one has played fewer rounds this year than McIlroy and McDowell.

Wednesday will be only the third competitive round in three months for McIlroy, who missed the cut in Abu Dhabi and has not played since then. McDowell returned from his long winter break last week at Riviera and missed the cut by one shot.

"I don't feel like I'm a guy that needs to play his way into form," McIlroy said. "I think I just practice, and if I feel like I'm confident on the range and hitting it well and playing well in practice rounds, then that'll translate into shooting good scores on the course."

Scores aren't necessarily important at Dove Mountain. This week is only about having a better score than the opponent.

Votto on verge of joining Canada for WBC

There were positive signals Tuesday night that Cincinnati Reds superstar Joey Votto would be added to Canada's roster for the World Baseball Classic ahead of Wednesday's deadline.

The first baseman from Toronto wants to play in the tournament, but the left knee he had surgery on last summer has cast some doubt on that.

To create some comfort on the part of the Reds, who signed him to a $225 million extension before last season, one possibility is that Votto joins the Canadian squad later to give Cincinnati more time to monitor his progress.

At the Classic, Votto could also ease his workload by splitting duties between first base and designated hitter with Justin Morneau.

Meanwhile, the Canadian squad did make one roster change Tuesday, naming left-handed Philadelphia Phillies prospect Jay Johnson of Sussex Corner, N.B., to the team in place of right-handed Milwaukee Brewers farmhand Nick Bucci, who withdrew after suffering a shoulder problem during a side session.

Johnson joins Mark Hardy of Campbell River, B.C., as the club?s only left-handers out of the bullpen (southpaw Andrew Albers of North Battleford, Sask., of the Minnesota Twins system will start), an issue director of national teams Greg Hamilton sought to address.

?We needed some options out of the bullpen and we believe Jay is a guy who gives us a chance to legitimately counter a good left-handed hitter in a key situation,? he said Tuesday morning. ?That?s what we?re looking at. He?s got the ability to punch out a left-hander in a tough spot and certainly has the stuff ? he?s not a whole lot of fun to see from the left side.?

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Russell Martin of Chelsea, Que., told Jon Paul Morosi of foxsports.com Monday that at the Classic he ?feels like playing shortstop. It?s a selfish move from my part. But it?s what I love to do. Sometimes you?ve got to do what you feel like doing for yourself. And I want to do it.?

While Martin has been taking ground balls with the Pirates, exactly how much shortstop he?ll actually play for Canada isn?t certain. Toronto-born Cale Iorg of the Detroit Tigers organization was slated to handle duties there.

?We respect Russ, we respect the thought process he has right now, and obviously we want him as part of our ball club and obviously we want him behind the plate,? said Hamilton. ?We will also discuss and work with him along his desire to see a little bit of time in the middle. What that means, we?re going to have to discuss as we move along here.?

'Snooze button' on biological clocks improves cell adaptability

Monday, February 18, 2013

The circadian clocks that control and influence dozens of basic biological processes have an unexpected "snooze button" that helps cells adapt to changes in their environment.

A study by Vanderbilt University researchers published online Feb. 17 by the journal Natureprovides compelling new evidence that at least some species can alter the way that their biological clocks function by using different "synonyms" that exist in the genetic code.

"This provides organisms with a novel and previously unappreciated mechanism for responding to changes in their environment," said Professor of Biological Sciences Carl Johnson. He and Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Antonis Rokas collaborated on the study.

Like many written languages, the genetic code is filled with synonyms: differently spelled "words" that have the same or very similar meanings. For a long time, biologists thought that these synonyms, called synonymous codons, were in fact interchangeable. Recently, they have realized that this is not the case and that differences in synonymous codon usage have a significant impact on cellular processes, so scientists have advanced a wide variety of ideas about the role that these variations play.

The new insight is not only an important advance in understanding evolution at the molecular level, but it also has potential applications in biotechnology, such as biofuel production, and gene therapy.

"While biological clocks are vital to maintaining healthy patterns of sleep, metabolism, physiology and behavior, under certain environmental conditions strict adherence to these rhythms can be disadvantageous," said Michael Sesma of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which partially funded the work. "This work shows how organisms can ignore the clock under certain circumstances?much like hitting a biological snooze button on the internal timepiece?and enhance their survival in the face of ever-changing circumstances."

The basic letters of the genetic code are a quartet of molecules (nucleic acids) designated A, C, G and U. These are combined into 61 triplets called codons, which are analogous to words. The codons provide the blueprints that the cell's protein-building machinery uses to generate amino acids, which are the basic building blocks that make all the proteins found in living organisms. However, cells only use 20 amino acids. That means a number of amino acids are produced by several different codons. For example, CCA, CCG and CCC are synonymous codons because they all encode for the same amino acid, proline.

It turns out that there is a reason for this redundancy. Some codons are faster and easier for cells to process and assemble into proteins than others. Recognition of this difference led to the concept of optimal codons and the hypothesis that natural selection should drive organisms ? particularly fast growing ones ? to use genes that use optimal codons to make critical proteins that need to be highly abundant or synthesized rapidly in cells.

The problem with this hypothesis was shown by Johnson and Rokas' study of the effect of changing codon usage on the simple biological clock found in single-celled cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and a similar study of the more complex biological clock found in bread mold performed by a team led by Yi Liu that were published together.

"What the Liu team found was that optimizing all the codons used by the fungal biological clock knocked the clock out, which was totally unexpected! Those researchers concluded that clock proteins in the fungus are not properly assembled if they are synthesized too rapidly; it's as if the speed of one's writing affected our ability to read the text," Johnson summarized.

In the cyanobacteria, however, the researchers observed a different phenomenon. At Vanderbilt, Research Associate Professor Yao Xu optimized the codons in the cyanobacteria's biological clock. This did not shut the clock down in the algae, but it did have a more subtle, but potentially as profound effect: It significantly reduced cell survival at certain temperatures.

"Xu figured that the biological clock with optimized codons might work better at lower temperatures and it did," Johnson said. However the substitution also modified the biological clock so it ran with a longer, 30-hour period. When forced to operate in a 24-hour daily light/dark cycles, the bacteria with the optimized clock grew significantly slower than "wild-type" cells. "In cyanobacteria, it's as if writing speed changes the meaning," said Rokas.

The potential importance of changes in synonymous codon usage in adapting to environmental factors is magnified by the fact that they can influence the operation of biological clocks, which function as a key adaptation to daily environmental rhythms. Biological clocks control and influence dozens of different basic biological processes, including sleeping and feeding patterns, core body temperature, brain activity, hormone production and cell regeneration.

"It is now clear that variations in codon usage is a fundamental and underappreciated form of gene regulation," said Rokas.

Recognition of the importance of this process has a number of potential applications in biotechnology. For example, "it should be possible to improve the ability of algae to robustly express biofuel-producing proteins from other organisms by optimizing the codons that they use," Johnson said.

Mophie Outride review: action-cam case for iPhone can't replace dedicated shooters

Mophie Outride review actioncam case for iPhone can't replace dedicated shooters

Over the years, Mophie has become synonymous with extending the iPhone's battery life. The outfit's range of battery-filled iPhone cases has garnered rave reviews across the industry, and even I religiously used one on an iPhone 3G. In more recent days, the company has cautiously expanded into a few new areas -- namely, building battery cases for non-Apple phones, and creating the contraption shown above. The Mophie Outride is an action-cam case that's designed to be strapped onto helmets, automobile hoods and any other place where your average X Games wannabe would look to capture extreme sports footage.

But, unlike the myriad rivals on the market today, the Outride doesn't actually include a camera. Instead, you're supposed to strap your iPhone 4 or 4S into it (an iPhone 5 model has yet to be announced), allowing the smartphone you already own to handle the bulk of the work. At first blush, it sounded like an ideal solution to me. After all, I'm generally in favor of convergence and consolidation, and as an avid traveler, having one less thing to carry (in this case, a dedicated camera) is a godsend. In practice, however, the Outride did little outside of convincing me that GoPro exists for a reason.

London Fashion Week: Old guard proves talent

IF THE first day of London Fashion Week was all about showcasing emerging talent, yesterday saw the old guard proving that they?ve very much still got it.

On Friday night, graduates of Central Saint Martin?s MA course showed their collections at one of the most anticipated shows of the week. Alumni Christopher Kane and Roksanda Ilinic sat in the front row looking for the fashion stars of tomorrow, and the collections were as avant garde and utterly unwearable as we?ve come to expect from students of what is arguably the best fashion course in the world.

Yesterday, however, London Fashion Week stalwarts including Clements Ribeiro, Jasper Conran and John Rocha left the exposed nipples and S&M references to the kids. These are some of the more established labels on the circuit and, as such, day two of the fashion extravaganza ? which sees designers showcasing their autumn/winter 2013-14 collections ? was decidedly grown-up.

Bohemian-flavoured husband and wife Clements Ribeiro went for a sophisticated urban punk aesthetic. Collars were heavy with jewels, shoes were flat, metallic and pointed of toe. Models wore mini kilts or tartan shift dresses, while delicate pieces came with chunky buckles.

John Rocha ? whose celebrated daughter Simone will show her own collection on Tuesday ? went for a slightly punky take on a buttoned-up aesthetic. Each model had a mass of black tulle in her hair like a gothic Miss Havisham. As ever, black featured heavily in his collection: it came in a simplified paisley pattern appliqu?d onto a delicate chiffon skirt; and on nippy little jackets with graphic cutouts on the collarbone.

However, a palette of mossy greens, sugary pinks and warm reds added interest. Skirts were full, silhouettes princessy and whimsical. Coats too ? whether a bell-shaped pink mohair number or a vivid green trench ? were full-skirted, enveloping the models without overwhelming them.

Jasper Conran is another member of British fashion?s old guard, but his collections remain fresh and new. Conran was inspired by Mia Farrow, and this was a swinging collection with a strong Sixties influence. Dresses and skirts were boxy and simple, worn with patent shoes with low block heels. The catwalk was a riot of colour ? bright orange, bubblegum pink, zingy violet ? and there was a touch of the Sixties air stewardess about the models.

Conran?s pieces were deceptively simple, with spliced seams revealing a hint of contrasting colour and paillettes tumbling effortlessly from a short shift dress. Possibly one of the most wearable collections to be shown so far, it was approachable but not staid, commercial yet eye-catching, and as accomplished as you?d expect for a designer who?s been on the circuit for decades.

Of the four fashion weeks around the world, London is considered the most avant garde, the young fashion rebel. However, it is increasingly proving its commercial credentials in an industry that?s worth ?21 billion to the UK economy.

This is the first London Fashion Week run by Natalie Massenet, the British Fashion Council?s new chairman. Launching the event on Friday, she said that at the recent New York Fashion Week there was ?palpable excitement? about what lay ahead in London.

London Fashion Week continues to grow in size and influence, and this season is one of the biggest to date, with 57 shows over five days. Over the past few years, a number of designers ? including Jonathan Saunders and Vivienne Westwood ? have returned to London after showing at other fashion weeks around the world. This week Welsh designer Julien Macdonald makes his return, while notable new additions to the schedule include L?Wren Scott and Tom Ford.

The latter ? one of the biggest names in fashion ? will stage his first full-scale womenswear show tomorrow. Also tomorrow, Motherwell-born Christopher Kane presents his collection: the most hotly anticipated show of the week. This will be Kane?s first show since signing a majority stake deal with luxury conglomerate PPR, the first British label to do so since Alexander McQueen in 2001.

This is also one of the most accessible London Fashion Weeks to date, with the British Fashion Council teaming up with YouTube for the first time to broadcast 21 shows live online. Online customers will be able to buy looks straight off the catwalk, watch the show live and follow it closely on Twitter.

This season also marks a heavier presence of high-street brands. Topshop has been involved in the event for years. For autumn/winter 2013-14 it is joined by two more high-street brands. Rihanna showed her debut collection for River Island last night, while Whistles will present a collection at an intimate salon show today, with fans of the brand watching live online.

Q&A: Currency the latest threat to global economy

LONDON (AP) ? The world economy faces a new threat. Instead of a banking collapse or too much debt, fears are growing that countries are using their currencies as an economic weapon.

History suggests that's never a good thing.

If too many countries try to weaken their currencies for economic gain ? sparking a "currency war" ? that could stifle business confidence and investment, sow turmoil in financial markets and derail a fragile global economy.

Following their meeting in Moscow this weekend, financial representatives from the world's leading 20 industrial and developing countries warned that "excess volatility of financial flows and disorderly movements in exchange rates have adverse implications for economic and financial stability."

Why is everyone talking about currencies?

? Since the start of the financial crisis, central banks around the world have been trying to stimulate their economies by keeping interest rates extremely low. The goal is to encourage consumers and businesses to borrow and spend more. One way central banks drive down rates is to use their power to print money to buy up large quantities of bonds. But by boosting the amount of currency in circulation, there is a side effect: it can drive down the value of that currency relative to others.

As a country's currency falls, its exports become cheaper, while those of its neighbors become relatively more expensive.

Japan, the world's third-largest economy, is currently under the harshest spotlight. To get its economy motoring again after a two-decade bout of stagnation, the government has said it would like to see inflation move higher. Markets have interpreted this as a signal that Japan's central bank is prepared to take actions that would result in driving down the yen, to boost exports and also put upward pressure on prices. Earlier this week, the yen fell to a 21-month low against the dollar and a near three-year trough against the euro.

So is Japan actively trying to weaken the yen?

? Yes and no. Though it's not directly intervening in the foreign exchange markets by selling yen and buying other currencies, strong comments from the new Japanese government have convinced markets that the Bank of Japan will create more money. Japan's Finance Minister Taro Aso insists the government isn't focused on exchange rates, but he has noted that the weakening yen has "brought huge benefits to the export sector" and that the world "has been awed" by the recent surge in share prices.

Why is that bad?

? A falling yen will help exporters, such as Sony and Toyota, and boost Japan's economy. And it will it tend to push prices - and ultimately wages ? higher. But if other countries respond to the falling yen by devaluing their currencies ? to maintain the competitiveness of their own exports ? Japan will be back to square one and the world economy could suffer.

Sharp fluctuations in the value of currencies can hurt business confidence and investment. Prices for imported raw materials and components would be volatile, profits will be hard to come by as prices fluctuate wildly and the value of any investment a company makes in another country could quickly be wiped out.

Who's been feeling the effect of Japan's actions so far?

? The euro, the currency used by the 17-strong group of European Union countries, has seen the biggest move on the foreign exchange markets. As the region moved on from its crippling debt crisis last summer, the euro has slowly gained in value. But since the change of government in Japan, its value against leading currencies such as the yen and U.S. dollar has shot up ? last December it was worth 113.19 yen and $1.29 and now it's at 124.93 yen and $1.33.

A rise in the value of the euro will do little to help the eurozone's businesses ? and will hardly help getting it growing again. Figures Thursday showed that the economic output of the region shrank at an annualized rate of around 2.5 percent in the last quarter of 2012.

What's been the reaction from other major economies?

? Politicians have voiced concerns about the euro's rise versus other major currencies ? most notably French President Francois Hollande, who indicated he was open to calls for a more managed exchange rate. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said last week that the bank will monitor the economic impact of the euro's rising value. Several analysts took that to mean the ECB could cut interest rates to bolster growth, which in theory could weaken the euro ? an indirect tit-for-tat response to the yen's fall, some say.

Earlier this week, the volatility in the currency markets prompted the Group of Seven leading industrial nations, which includes the U.S, Germany as well as Japan, to warn about the effects of volatile movements in exchange rates.

Might other countries try to manipulate their currencies in response to Japan?

? There is no sign of that ? so far. Speaking in Moscow Saturday, International Monetary Fund Director Christine Lagarde dismissed the possibility of an international currency conflict, saying that she was witnessing "currency worries, not currency wars."

But a country fixing the value of its currency is not without precedent.

In Sept. 2011, Switzerland took action to arrest the rise of its currency, the Swiss franc. The rise was triggered by the debt crisis in the eurozone ? investors were looking for somewhere safe to park their cash and the Swiss franc has traditionally fulfilled that role. The Swiss intervention was viewed as an attempt to protect the country's exporters.

U.S. politicians have for years accused China of keeping its currency, the renminbi, artificially weak in order to industrialize fast. And many countries believe the U.S. long ago abandoned the "strong dollar" policy in a dash for growth.

How bad could a currency war get?

? Since World War II, one of the key objectives of international economic policymaking has been to avoid a repeat of the 1930s, when countries around the world engaged in a tit-for-tat battle with their exchange rates. That decimated global trade, accentuating the depression and providing another catalyst to war.

Assuming the world doesn't descend into a similar abyss, a currency war can still harm the global economy. For example, central banks, particularly in the developing world, may resort to controlling the amount of capital that can be moved out of a country to affect exchange rates.

"Increasing impediments to the free flow of capital might be thought to lower the potential growth of the world economy," said Stephen Lewis, chief economist at Monument Securities.

Can the world's leaders and central bankers calm the situation?

? As many analysts had expected, this weekend's G-20 meeting in Moscow finished on Saturday with a warning on the dangers of competitive devaluations and a pledge that it will "not target our exchange rates for competitive purposes, will resist all forms of protectionism and keep our markets open."

The G20 communique ? and the G7 statement earlier this week ? failed to single out one country's actions for criticism.

Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at the Martin Smith School of Business at California State University, said that should come as no surprise.

"Many countries including China, Japan and the United States all have issues related to exchange rates," he said. "People in glass houses should not throw stones."

SCHLADMING, Austria (AP) ? Overall World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher won the men's slalom title on the last day of the skiing world championships for his first individual gold at a major event.

Hirscher held onto his first-run lead to finish in a combined time of 1 minute, 51.03 seconds.

Felix Neureuther of Germany was 0.41 seconds back in second. Mario Matt of Austria took third, 0.65 behind.

Three-time champion Ted Ligety of the United States skied out in the first run.

Hirscher, who finished second to Ligety in the giant slalom, missed the 2011 worlds because of a broken foot.

Hirscher's victory earned the host nation its second gold of the worlds, after the mixed team event.

Spartanburg celebrates Black History Month with a parade

Spartanburg honored Black History Month by holding the annual Heritage Parade Saturday in downtown.

Some spectators hid from the cold, damp weather in cars along the route, but Saturday's annual Heritage Parade drew a crowd.

This year is the 10th anniversary of the celebration, and the theme was "A Salute to Our Children: They are Our Future." Many parade spectators and participants brought their children. The grand marshals of the parade were community centenarians. Their presence in a limousine symbolized the passing of heritage through the generations, according to the Community Heritage Committee that organized the parade.

Barbara Dawkins of Spartanburg said her children are long grown, but she brought her great-grandson to the parade in hopes of teaching him important lessons from an early age.

"I'm bringing him so he knows his heritage," she said. "He's only 3, but he knows a lot. I don't know how long I'm going to be here to tell him."

The parade isn't about black or white, Dawkins said, it's about community and celebrating progress.

"We have to learn to get along with each other. We have to learn to love one another," she said.

Before departing from Carver Middle School and proceeding down Church Street to the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, colorful floats, sports cars and bands lined up for blocks. Hundreds of people from church groups, community organizations, government agencies and local schools participated in the parade. Featured bands included Dudley High School Marching Band from Greensboro, N.C. and Harding University High School Band of Gold from Charlotte, N.C.

Robin and Michelle Thompson of Roebuck said they have been coming to the parade since it started, and agreed with Dawkins it is a celebration of the community.

"A lot of the people who are in the parade are important parts of the community," Michelle Thompson said.

This year the couple's son was marching in the parade with the Boy Scouts. He is also a part of his church youth group and school band. The Thompson's said the parade was a good example to their son of community involvement, which they encourage.

India's middle class wants Income Tax limit raised : Postnoon

Raise-the-limit!postnoon-news

A pan-Indian urban survey reveals that salaried people, including those in the private sector,?unanimously feel that their IT limit should be raised?considerably.

A vast majority of the salaried class, employ?ed in a host of trade and industry sectors, want the Finance Minister P Chidambaram to raise the exemption limit of income tax to at least `3 lakh and increase deductions such as medical and educational allowances in the Union budget so that they are left with more purchasing power, a comprehensive Assocham survey across major cities has indicated.

The surveyed cities are: Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahme?dabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Kochi. Titled, Budget 2013: Common man?s expectations from the FM, it examined 2,500 employees from the different sectors.

Over 89 per cent of the respondents said that the slab of tax-free income has not moved up in line with real inflation. The current basic exemption limit of `2,00,000 should be increased to at least `3,00,000, with the limit for women going upto `3,50,000 lakh. This will increase the purchasing power of individuals and stimulate demand.

?Pushing the basic exemption limit will help the tax payers in saving on taxes and also align it with the proposals made by the parliamentary standing committee on the Direct Taxes Code (DTC),? the survey noted.

With increasing healthcare costs, the existing tax-free limit of `15,000 should be increased to `50,000. The same also needs to be considered in the budget, said 89 per cent of the respondents.

Raise-the-limit!1postnoon-news

The transportation allowance granted by the employer to his employee for commuting between the place of work and residence is tax-free to the extent of `800 per month. This limit was fixed more than a decade ago, and definitely needs to be revised upwards to at least `3,000 per month, given the rising commuting costs across the country, adds the survey.

?Additional benefits related to housing, the deduction limit for payment of interest (on self-occupied property) has remained constant at `1,50,000 since 2001. There is an increase in property prices, and accordingly the amount of loan. An increase in the exemption limit to `2,50,000 will be a welcome change,? reveals the survey.

?Section 80C of the IT Act provides a deduction of `1,00,000 for certain investments. This provision helps people in making forced savings that, helps them in the future. A common man expects this limit to be increased to `2,00,000, with sub-limit of `50,000 exclusively for insurance and pension, adds DS Rawat, secretary general Assocham.

Wide spectrum covered

The survey was able to target employees from 18 broad sectors, with the maximum share contributed by employees from IT/ITes sector (17 per cent). After IT/ITeS sector, contribution of the survey respondents from financial services is 11 per cent. Employees working in engineering and telecom sector contributed 9 per cent and 8 per cent respectively in the questionnaire.

Nearly 6 per cent of the employees belonged to market research/KPO and media background each. Management, FMCG and infrastructure sector employees? share is 5 per cent each in the total survey. Respondents from power and the real estate sector contributed 4 per cent each. Employees from education and food and beverages sector provided a share of 3 per cent each. Advertising, manufacturing and textile employees offered a share of 2 per cent each in the survey results.

Around 55 per cent of the survey respondents fall under the age bracket of 25-29 years, followed by 30-39 years (26 per cent), 40-49 years (16 per cent), 50-59 years (2 per cent) and 60-65 years.

?Investments in infrastructure bonds are currently allowed for a deduction up to `20,000. These bonds have proved to be quite popular and the limit should be increased to `50,000 and those withdrawn must be restored, considering that the government needs massive funds for the development of the infrastructure sector. Also, the lock-in period must be restricted to five years,?added 82 per cent respondents.

Over 71 per cent of the respondents demanded that the national pension system (NPS) be brought under the exempt-exempt-exempt (EEE ) as against exempt-exempt-tax (EET) at present. This means that investors get a tax exemption at all three stages of investment, appreciation and withdrawal.?

Can we protect against dangerous space rocks?

A meteor explosion over Russia injured hundreds of people today (Feb. 15), just hours before an asteroid about half the size of a football field gave Earth an extremely close shave, catapulting the need to protect our home planet from hazardous space rocks into the spotlight.?

The two events raise questions about our preparedness for?dangerous encounters with asteroids, and by sheer coincidence one group of scientists has just unveiled plans for a novel system to vaporize asteroids in space that threaten Earth.

"We have to come to grips with discussing these issues in a logical and rational way," UC Santa Barbara physicist Philip M. Lubin said in a statement Thursday (Feb. 14), the day before the Russian meteor explosion.

"We need to be proactive rather than reactive in dealing with threats. Duck and cover is not an option," Lubin added. "We can actually do something about it, and it's credible to do something. So let's begin along this path. Let's start small and work our way up. There is no need to break the bank to start."

The hazards of asteroid impacts are starkly clear in Russia, where more than 900 people were injured and hundreds of buildings damaged by the shockwave from the meteor's explosion in the atmosphere, according to press reports. [Russian Meteor Explosion Injures Hundreds (Video)]

Lubin and his colleagues have conceived of a system they call DE-STAR, or Directed Energy Solar Targeting of Asteroids and exploration. The concept: harness power from the sun and convert it into a massive phased array of laser beams that can deflect or evaporate?asteroids hazardous to Earth.

"This system is not some far-out idea from Star Trek," Gary B. Hughes, a researcher at California Polytechnic State University, said in a statement. "All the components of this system pretty much exist today. Maybe not quite at the scale that we'd need ? scaling up would be the challenge ? but the basic elements are all there and ready to go."

The scale the team has in mind is quite astounding ? ranging from one system the size of a desktop device to one measuring 6 miles (10 kilometers) in diameter ? and the capabilities would improve with each expansion.

DE-STAR 2, for example, would be about 330 feet (100 meters) in diameter, or about the size of the International Space Station, and could nudge comets or asteroids out of their orbits, the team said. Such a system would cost hundreds of millions of dollars, as it would need to be constructed in orbit from smaller pieces, Hughes said in an email to SPACE.com.

Taking a modular approach, the orbital system would keep getting bigger. The researchers envision DE-STAR 4 to be 100 times as big as DE-STAR 2 and say it would be capable of vaporizing a menacing 1,640-foot-wide (500-m) asteroid within a year by beaming it with 1.4 megatons of energy each day.

Hughes added that today's events ? the Russian meteor blast and the unprecedented close approach of asteroid 2102 DA14 ? "should remind us that there are asteroids and comets that cross Earth's orbit which pose a credible risk of impact."

"If we acknowledge the threat of impact, and the potential for severe disturbances to Earth and society, we should be compelled to investigate realistic approaches for mitigating the risk of impact," Hughes said in an email to SPACE.com. "DE-STAR is one such realistic approach, being based on sound concepts and an existing technological base. An orbiting DE-STAR 2 system would allow rapid reaction to smaller threats. A larger system could defuse any threat if detected sufficiently in advance."

The team thinks their ideas could have implications for?asteroid mining?and deep space travel, too. The DE-STAR systems could be a valuable tool for evaluating an asteroid's composition and figuring out which lucrative, rare elements it might hold, such as lanthanum, which is used in the batteries of hybrid cars. And a gigantic system that the team has imagined, DE-STAR 6, could serve as a massive orbiting power source, allowing interstellar travel without a warp drive.

"The ability to focus energy on a distant target would allow acceleration of interplanetary spacecraft," Hughes said. "Our calculations indicate that a 1,000-kg (2,200-pound) spacecraft could be accelerated to Mars and arrive in 15 days. Continuous acceleration could send a spacecraft to relativistic speeds, a tantalizing prospect for interstellar travel."

The team is currently preparing a manuscript on DE-STAR to submit for peer review.

a new opinion in Sports about Reebok Realflex Fusion Tr

As a mum, when I am chasing around after the kids and doing the school run, I usually dress pretty casually in jeans with trainers. When my last pair of trainers developed a hole in them last spring, I decided I needed a new pair, and as I had done the time before when I needed trainers, went online to look at them. I hate shopping and as long as I stick to the reebok brand, I can be pretty confident that I can buy in my usual size and they will fit me. Other brands I have not been as lucky with as they can sometimes be a bit narrow for my feet.

I was drawn to the realflex trainers not because I am a runner like they are intended for, but because they are very funky looking shoes, and the stiking black design I picked with pink sole and laces was very appealing to me visually.

When the trainers arrived in the post from JD sports I was a little wary with my purchase decision. At ?70, they are not a cheap pair of trainers, yet when I took these out of the box, they looked really thin, and I couldn't see how they would not wear out really quickly as there just did not seem to be any padding round the heel in particular.

However, after I had worn these a few times my doubts did start to fade. Putting these on the first time to leave the house, I felt as though I didn't have any shoes on. My feet were so comfortable and the shoes are so light on my feet I can see why runners would choose these as even when I am just walking about at a brisk pace, I feel a bit less sluggish and it is no effort at all to pick up my feet.

I've worn these out and about for whole day trips with the kids, and these are a supportive shoe that remain comfortable even if worn for several hours of activity. The closest I get to running is a brisk walk most days when we are late for school, but I would wear them for sport too as they do feel supportive to my knees and ankles. My knees in particular are prone to pain if my shoes are not supporting me well, and I don't have a problem at all with these shoes.

There are a couple of negatives. These are fabric shoes, which makes them breathable, but not waterproof by any stretch of the imagination. And because they are thin, if it is cold outside then there is no warmth there like you get with leather shoes. Although this does mean your feet have good ventilation on a warmer day. Grip is quite good. I went out when it was frosty in these, but wouldn't risk going out in the rain or snow if I want to stay dry.

Another negative is the sole is designed as a series of rectangular and square projections which remind me a bit of the studs you get on the bottom of football boots. These look great, are flexible when you walk to give good heel-toe action, and give good grip, but when walking on muddy surfaces or pavements that have bits of loose gravel, you end up picking up all kinds of debris on the bottom of your shoe. I then find when I take the shoes off, the flex in the sole means that the shoe bends releasing all these bits of trapped stones on my floors. If I don't notice them and walk on my laminate floor, it could scratch it, so I have to be very careful and take my shoes off straight away. Not a massive hassle as I do that anyway, but it is annoying having to pick stones out my shoe all the time, or if I feel them as I am walking along.

So overall, these look great, they are very supportive, but really they are fair weather shoes. I would wear them for sport as they are supportive and have good grip, but I would be wary about where I went in them, due to them being not waterproof and picking up so much debris from the floor.

Summary: I feel a lot fitter wearing these even if I don't put the thought into much action
